First meeting of the policy level Steering Committee held regarding the implementation of the Juvenile Justice Act and the Child Rights Protection Act

 

First meeting of the policy level Steering Committee established to oversee the formulation of the implementation plan of Law No: 18/2019 (Juvenile Justice Act) and Law No: 19/2019 (Child Rights Protection Act), was held yesterday, 27th August 2020.

This virtual meeting chaired by Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath, was attended by Minister of Gender, Family and Social Services Aishath Mohamed Didi, Honorable Justice of the Supreme Court of Maldives Aisha Shujune Muhammad, Chair of the Judicial Service Commission Hisaan Hussain, Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem, CEO of the Local Government Authority Fathimath Afshan Latheef, Children’s Ombudsperson Niumath Shafeeg, along with senior officials from Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services.

At this meeting, the Steering Committee was updated on the efforts undertaken by the Working Group as per the mandate allocated in the high level policy meeting held on 9th August 2020, to identify the tasks allocated to state agencies under the Juvenile Justice Act and Child Rights Protection Act, the resources required for implementation, anticipated challenges to implementation and proposed solutions.

In that regard, Steering Committee noted the importance of adopting a multi-stakeholder approach towards implementation of both laws, the need to prioritise obligations that require immediate enforcement and exploring avenues to mobilize resources to achieve the same under both Acts.

Steering Committee also discussed and provided guidance to the Working Group on a way forward.
