Honourable Uz. Ahmed Usham was appointed
as the Attorney General of the Republic of Maldives by His Excellency
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on 17th November 2023.
Uz. Ahmed Usham attained his Bachelor of
Laws in 2009 from the University of the West of England Bristol, United
Kingdom and was subsequently admitted as an attorney at law in the Republic
of Maldives. Furthermore, he holds a Diploma in International Relations from
The London College, United Kingdom.
Uz. Ahmed Usham commenced his
distinguished career in public service in 1999, as an Assistant Secretary at
the President’s Office. Following completion of his Diploma, he rejoined the
President’s Office in 2002 as a Public Relations Officer (Trainee). From 2004
onwards, he served as an Assistant Public Relations Officer for over a year.
After attaining his Bachelor of Laws, Uz.
Ahmed Usham briefly resumed his duties at the President’s Office, before
starting his tenure at the Attorney General’s Office on 7th July
2009. Over the course of a decade, he served with dedication in various
pivotal legal capacities, including Deputy Solicitor General and Deputy
Attorney General.
Throughout his substantial tenure at the
Attorney General’s Office, he made noteworthy contributions in areas such as
dispute resolution and representing the State in all constitutional and civil
cases involving the State at all tiers of the Maldivian judicial hierarchy,
provision of legal opinions on matters of State interest, executing legal
works necessary for implementing Government policies and representing the
Maldives in high-profile international cases and arbitrations. Notably, he
represented the Government of Maldives in arbitrations initiated against the
Maldives by GMR-MAHB Consoritum and GMIAL, Nexbiz Limited and Noomadi Resorts
and Residences AG.
In the context of office management,
under the guidance of the Attorney General, Uz. Ahmed Usham provided
leadership and oversight to all the employees of the Attorney General’s
Office, supervised and managed all works of the Civil Litigation and Dispute
Resolution Division and the Legal Affairs Division, offered legal insights to
the Attorney General on Government assigned matters, and played a critical
role in the comprehensive management of the Office.
Prior to assuming the position of the
Attorney General, Uz. Ahmed Usham held the distinguished position of Member
of Parliament, representing the Vilimale’ constituency, at the 19th
People’s Majlis of the Maldives. From 28th May 2019 to 17th
November 2023, he diligently represented the concerns of his constituents on
the Parliament floor, proposed legislative amendments, submitted urgent
matters, held Government Ministers accountable through rigorous questioning,
actively engaged in 9 (nine) Parliamentary Committees at the 19th
People’s Majlis.
In his capacity as the Attorney General,
Uz. Ahmed Usham also currently serves as a member of the Judicial Service
Commission, and presides as the President of the Clemency Board of the
Maldives.
