The Maldives has participated in the review
of its 6th - 7th combined periodic reports submitted under the Convention on
the Rights of the Child (Convention). The review session was held by the UN
Committee on the Rights of the Child (Committee), and took place in Geneva,
Switzerland from 12 to 13 January 2026.
The Maldives became party to the Convention
on 11 February 1991. The Maldives’ combined 6th – 7th periodic reports detailed
the work undertaken by the Maldives in implementing Convention obligations from
2016 to 2021.
During the review, which was conducted over
two sessions, the Maldivian Delegation responded to questions raised by the
Committee members regarding the efforts undertaken by the Maldives to implement
the Convention from 2016 to date.
In the statements delivered by Attorney
General Ahmed Usham, as Head of Delegation at the review, he emphasised that
children are the promise of the future, and that ensuring every child grows in
dignity, safety, and with a voice that is heard remains a national priority. He
noted that the Convention on the Rights of the Child continues to guide
Maldivian laws, policies, and development efforts, and reaffirmed the
Government’s commitment to strengthening systems and fostering environments
where every child is safe, respected, and empowered to thrive.
The Maldivian Delegation to the review
included Attorney General Ahmed Usham, the Minister of Homeland Security and
Technology Ali Ihusaan, as well as senior officials from the Attorney General’s
Office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Social and Family
Development, the Ministry of Education and the Permanent Mission of the
Republic of Maldives to the United Nations Office at Geneva.
Following this review session, the Committee
will issue its concluding observations and recommendations based on the reports
submitted by the Maldives and the information shared by the Maldives with the
Committee during the session.
